Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE)

One Spirit’s CPE program expands on the role of the chaplain in today’s society. Traditionally a role in hospital and hospice, One Spirit expands this calling to encompass the many places that are in need of the chaplains skills; senior centers, homeless shelters, corporations, the possibilities are endless. Completion of this program earns 400 hours or one unit of CPE. This program is accredited by the College of Pastoral Supervision and Psychotherapy (CPSP).

Although historically Clinical Pastoral Education training has been conducted in a hospital setting, the chaplaincy skills developed, with use of clinical assessment, can be applied in many different settings such as in homeless shelters, nursing homes, pastoral and congregational work, hospices, prisons, or in other ministerial work in which you are interacting with others.

Program Accreditation: One Spirit Learning Alliance (OSLA) is offering a Fall extended Clinical Pastoral Education (“CPE”) program from September 2010 through May 2011. This program is accredited by the College of Pastoral Supervision and Psychotherapy (“CPSP”). Rev. Elaine Barry, M.A., Board Certified Clinical Chaplain and Pastoral Counselor, and Supervisor-in- Training, is Program Coordinator, and Co‑Facilitator, with Cesar G. Espineda, Ph.D., Diplomate- Training Supervisor, who is the Director.

Program Focus: The seminar is limited to 18 trainees. Attention is given to the development and refinement of pastoral identity, authority and clinical skills through an action-reflection-action education model. Trainees will be immersed in exploring issues related to (depending on site placement) the following: homelessness, aging, long-term care, dementia, specific medical conditions, end-of-life care, bereavement, bio-ethics, multicultural ministry, critical incident, and pastoral-theological, psychological, emotional, or mal/adaptive behavior themes.

Schedule: The Fall Unit (400 hours) is an extended program which runs 28-30 weeks from September 2010 through May 2011. Seminars will be held on Mondays from 6 PM to 10 PM in Room 1506 at OSLA, 330 West 38th Street, New York, New York 10018. Completion of this program earns one unit of CPE.

Each participant must have a confirmed site placement with 10-12 assigned hours of client/ patient contact each week, in addition to seminar and supervision sessions. Please note, as CPE trainees you will usually be processed as volunteer chaplains or pastoral counselors at your site. The completion of volunteer orientation and medical screenings are dependent on the policies of the site placement. There is also a requirement for bi‑weekly supervision sessions in person, as well as bi‑weekly supervision sessions via phone.

Application Deadline: A nonrefundable $45 application fee is required with your completed materials. Please make checks payable to One Spirit Learning Alliance and, in the memo field, please write CPE FALL 2010. Upon receipt of your completed application materials you will be contacted in order to schedule an interview.

The deadline for all applications is August 1

Tuition: Tuition is $995.00 for the full unit. There are two payment plans:

  1. Full tuition payment of $995.00 at time of acceptance (due no later than the first day of seminar); or
  2. Two payments of $497.50, first due with acceptance (no later than first day of seminar) with the second due on first day of seminar in January 2011.

All applicants will be notified of their acceptance on or before Monday, August 16, 2010. In order to secure one of the 18 spaces, a nonrefundable deposit of $100.00 is required along with your application form. The deposit is credited toward the total tuition fee.

Eligibility: Prerequisites include (1) an undergraduate degree (Associates or Bachelors); (2) some formal theological education, or education in a related field; (3) an ability and work within an interfaith and interdisciplinary team; (4) lay or ordained professionals, or students of ministry; and (5) ready access to a computer and email in order to fully participate in the training.

Contact Information: For application materials, or for more information, please contact Rev. Elaine Barry, Program Coordinator, at 212‑715‑7674 or at ebarry@kramerlevin.com.

And come to the C.P.E. Open House on July 19th 6:30 - 8:30 at One Spirit.

"In CPE I have developed the capacity to reflect in the moment, deeply connecting to what I am doing and able to redirect my actions as needed for the benefit of the person before me. The paradox is that I have connected more deeply with my own values as I am working with others and their values. An unexpected gift of this training is that I am more fully in touch with myself and have more awareness of another at the same time. This training is invaluable to all ministries and ministers no matter of their calling."
