The life of Jesus has had more effect on Western culture than any other. Yet our knowledge of his life is limited, captured primarily in the four documents of the New Testament known as the Gospels. So many of us know these only in part -- from stories we have been told about them, or from tidbits passed along in sermons or speeches, and often offered only through the lens of a judgmental theology. Was this Jesus just a brilliant master teacher?...a political revolutionary?...the divine son of God?...or merely a gifted magician? Over six sessions, we will together read these ancient texts and discuss them in a seminar format. Rev. Wallace will offer historic background and scholarship to give context to the readings, but our ambition is to come to these with “beginner’s mind” – reading them for the very first time to see what they say to us today. We will encounter the parables –Jesus’ powerful and sometimes oblique teaching style, read of the miracles, and learn the details of his short but commanding ministry. Join us as we read Matthew, Mark, Luke, John and an assortment of other ancient historians in learning about the life and work of the rabbi, Jesus, which has been called “the greatest story ever told”. Absolutely no prior sacred text knowledge is necessary or expected.
The text used in this class is The New Testament in Modern English, Revised Edition, translated by J.B. Phillips and available through the One Spirit bookstore, plus any other standard translation of the New Testament.
Important note: Please read the Gospel of Mark in any translation before the first class.
Rev. David Wallace is an Interfaith minister and 2nd year dean for One Spirit Interfaith Seminary. He is a graduate of St. John’s College in Santa Fe, NM, and a lifelong student of the “great books” of philosophy and archetypal psychology. David teaches electives on the sacred texts of both the Eastern and Western traditions for One Spirit.
