07-814 Integral Spirituality: Exploring the Common Core of
Human Wisdom
With Dr. Kurt Johnson, Ph.D. and
Rev. Michael Pergola, JD, MBA
We
are approaching a point in human history where the heritage
of human wisdom at the core of the world’s great spiritual,
philosophical and ethical traditions will either coalesce into
a rich, multi-textured resource for our species' further evolution,
or become a stumbling block that causes conflict, chaos and
perhaps extinction.
It is very recent that writers such as Ken Wilber,
Brother Wayne Teasdale and others have integrated the full spectrum
of that wisdom with contemporary knowledge in psychology, science
and the humanities. Only today is it possible to access a complete
picture of the entire heritage of human wisdom. Such a holistic
study has the potential to open our hearts in ways that lead to
a better understanding of the human condition and a deeper capacity
to act skillfully even under difficult conditions.
This course will integrate Ken Wilber’s recent
work Integral Spirituality, Wayne Teasdale’s The Mystic
Heart, and other contemporary theories to provide a clearer picture
of what it means to be fully human. In the light of Wilber’s
comprehensive map of human consciousness we will explore practices
and perspectives that encourage our development as complete human
beings. Students will find it easy to learn the Integral Map,
including; levels, lines, states, types, quadrants, and zones.
You will also become familiar with the common teachings at the
heart of all the great traditions, as well as the various ways
each tradition understands identity and consciousness. Each class
will include a mix of lecture, discussion, experiential exercises
and spiritual practices designed to open the heart, awaken the
mind and develop a deep capacity for skillful action.
Dr.
Kurt Johnson works professionally across a number of
fields: world religions, spirituality, ethics, science, literature
and business. Active internationally in trans-traditional spiritual
practice, he is a founding member, with Bro. Wayne Teasdale, of
InterSpiritual Dialogue in Action. He has also been a founder
of the Coalition for OneVoice and the World Wisdom Alliance. Dr.
Johnson is a member of Ken Wilber’s east coast Integral
Alliance and Deepak Chopra’s Global Networking Leaders group.
He was a co-host at the 2004 Parliament of World Religions, is
on the faculty of the Humanist Institute and serves on the board
of One Spirit Learning Alliance. Kurt is the author of numerous
articles and books in science, literature and spirituality. He
serves on the American Association for the Advancement of Science’s
panel on the Dialogue of Science, Ethics, and Religion. For over
a decade Kurt was a monk in the Christian tradition and is today
a recognized teacher in the Hindu “Oneness” tradition
of Advaita Vedanta. His primary interest is the profound simplicity
of contemplative practice and its global application to conscious
living.
Rev.
Michael Pergola MA, MBA, JD. Co-Founder & President
of One Spirit Learning Alliance has pursued an understanding of
consciousness in individuals and collectives for over 30 years.
A long time student of the world’s wisdom traditions, he

and practiced law at Wilmer, Cutler and Pickering for nine years.
He has a JD and MBA from Cornell University and a Masters in organizational
Dynamics and Individual Development from the University of Pennsylvania.
He is an Enneagram teacher, a facilitator, mediator, meditation

hosted by the Board of
Trustees of the Fourth Universalist Society

COSMIC
MASS NYC
One Radiant Peace –
The Marriage of
Compassion and
Strength
The Cosmic
Mass is a revolutionary, multimedia worship
form that invokes the sacred into body, mind, heart and spirit.
Based on "Creation Spirituality" (the work of theologian
Matthew Fox), the Cosmic Mass draws from ritual across traditions
and from the arts. Elements from Western, Eastern, and indigenous
spiritual wisdom blend with multi-media imagery, ecstatic music,
poetry and dance to create an interfaith, multi-cultural and
intergenerational celebration.
Doors will open at 6:30 so that participants
can move around the space and view the altars (created by One
Spirit students, alumni and staff) celebrating the Divine
Feminine and Sacred Masculine, and the concept
of Peace through the prism of many faith traditions.
At 7:30 the Mass begins with a procession of costumed dancers,
jesters and celebrants.
Worship
begins with the experience of the Via
Positiva, time for liberating the soul, finding
delight
and awe, through wild, rave-like dancing led by the DJ
Shaman Rev Bobby D.
The energy then slows as we enter the
Via Negativa,
the time for letting go, entering the sacred darkness,
acknowledging and reclaiming the shadow aspects of ourselves,
and opening to our shared sorrow and grief. As we emerge from
the darkness, our hearts open to the energy of compassion that
pervades the Via Creativa.
Through music, poetry, chanting and communion, we feel into
our interconnected-ness with the whole of creation. Finally,
we move into the Via Transformativa,
where we are given the sacred charge to transform the world
through the openings that flow when we release creative energy.
We are “anointed as prophets” and sent out to “join
the dance of all creation in the quest for balance.”
You
can help right now to create this sacred event! The
Cosmic Mass Sanctuary will be filled with images of Peace, the
Sacred Masculine and the Divine Feminine through a slide show
projected on large screens throughout the room. You can participate
by sending visual impressions of these themes as digital photos

07-820 The Evolutionary Journey from Dirt
to God: Experiencing the Stages of Divine Energy Through
Music, Movies and Voice Dialogue
With Rev. Michael Pergola MA, MBA, JD. Co-Founder &
President
Spiral
Dynamics is one of several empirically validated developmental
theories focused on the human potential for growth throughout
the life cycle. According to these constructive developmental
theories, as well as the wisdom of the great spiritual traditions,
there are many different ways we see and experience the
world based on the particular nature of our personal development.
These levels or stages of development will manifest in different
energies, perceptions and behaviors, and often we will not
even know that they are at play in our lives. At times we
may find ourselves stalled at a stage that makes us less
effective, less energized and less alive than we would like
to be, without understanding why.
Who/what is it that gets stalled? A useful answer is the
ego, the identity or the self-sense. If we think of our
self-sense as the chauffeur that drives us through life,
it’s easy to understand how we might ignore the chauffeur,
and the route she is taking, if we are satisfied with the
journey. However, as the pathways become more complex, we
may find ourselves wishing for a driver who has a better
appreciation of all the options on the map; or even a deeper
understanding of where we hope to end up. While our sense
of self under girds the way we see ourselves and the way
we act, it is easy to be unaware of the assumptions compressed
into the self-sense. Spiral Dynamics and other developmental
theories help us appreciate the self-sense in objective
ways.
In this workshop, we will use music, dance, movie clips
and voice dialog to experience the different energies that
make up our personal developmental arc. We will become aware
of blocks we have to the flow of particular energies and
explore practices that strengthen our capacity to feel and
hold these energies in a healthy way. This workshop will
further our own development, help us better understand our
life and clarify our relationships with significant others.

07-818 Sacred Scriptures:
The Gospel of Thomas & Other Gnostic Texts
With Rev. David Wallace

Between the 2nd and 4th centuries A.D., a rich literature emerged
amongst some sects of early Christians which proposed that there
was a secret, revealed knowledge of God. These teachings –
thought to be transcribed from oral teachings of the first disciples
of Jesus -- became known as Gnosticism (“gnosis” is
the Greek word for “knowledge"). Lost writings from
this period were found in Egypt in 1945 – the Nag Hammadi
texts – and scholars have long suggested that Christianity
would look much different if it had been shaped by the ideas represented
by these – pictures of a very human Jesus who was a master
at Zen-like teaching, who was both informed and intimate with
Mary Magdalene, who celebrated the Divine as both Mother and Father,
and who taught a radical egalitarianism which prefers spiritual
experience and “living the message” over mere religious
observance.
Over the course of four evenings, we will read selections
from the classic 2nd century Gnostic texts (purported to be written
by Jesus’s twin, Judas Thomas; his brother, James; his disciple,
the fisherman John, and others): The Gospel of Thomas (the major
text of Gnostic experience); the Gospel of Mary Magdalene; The
Secret Book of John, and others. In a seminar setting, we will
look at the historic context of the early Christian church, and
search for the mystic heart message of these extraordinary words
– timeless, alive and as poignantly enigmatic as they are
compelling – and, potentially, healing.
Rev.
David Wallace is an Interfaith minister and 2nd year
dean for One Spirit Interfaith Seminary. He is a graduate of the
classics department of St. John’s College and is a lifelong
student of the “great books” of philosophy and psychology.
David has an extensive career in publishing and marketing, along

07-816 Sacred Activism & the
Journey to Resurrection: An Easter Retreat
With Andrew Harvey & Rev. Diane Berke

Whatever our religious or spiritual background,
the Easter story offers a powerful metaphor for the inner transformative

to sacred darkness and mystery; and we emerge, empowered, into
more authentic expression of self and fuller engagement with life.
We will tap into the powerful spiritual energy of Easter as we
explore how to understand and engage this process of our own transformation
in support of living lives of compassionate service to the world.

07-815 Enneagram: Nine
Faces of Ego
and Nine Aspects of Essential Presence
With Rev. Michael Pergola, Rev. Karen Watt &
Rev. Tony Zito
The
Enneagram is a powerful topology whose roots can be traced to
many of the world’s great wisdom traditions. One of its
unique aspects is that it provides both a psychological and spiritual
map of our inner landscape. It correlates well with a variety
of spiritual teachings including the ancient Christian, Jewish,
Buddhist, and Sufi traditions. Each of these traditions describes
perceptual patterns similar to those described by the Enneagram.
Rather than put people in boxes, the Enneagram seeks to help us
escape from the boxes and habitual patterns we find ourselves
in. It is a dynamic tool for understanding how our ego develops
and how we can let go of the unconscious patterns that control
us so we can reconnect with our essential nature.
The spiritual Enneagram describes nine characteristic
ways we turn away from our essential nature as the ego develops.
In this process (of ego development) we are in the thrall of a
particular passion that drives our behavior and creates a false
face of personality that becomes the characteristic way we show
up in the world. These habits of mind act as a screen that filters
the way we experience reality. Learning about our perceptual screens
is the first step in noticing how they control us. We will explore
the beliefs, defenses, emotional patterns and behavioral predispositions
that stem from our core wounds and that unconsciously direct our
life. Thisallows us to expand the various perspectives we take
of life’s experiences, and to re-access the lost qualities
of our essential nature.

07-821 From Individuation to Conscious Connection to Global
Awareness
with Elisa Novick
We exist within a complex multidimensional web of relationship
that transcends all time and space. As we purify ourselves of
ancient holding patterns we become able to tap into greater
levels of freedom and responsibility and can take part in the
magnificent creation that is this universe.
Neuropsychology says that we are wired to connect. We have the
biological capacity to come into sync with others to access
collective intelligence — a higher wisdom. This is what
Jesus meant when he said, “when two or more are gathered,
there will I be,” meaning that when we truly connect,
the Christ Consciousness activates automatically. Rumi referred
to this when he said, “...there is a field — I’ll
meet you there” and modern philosophers speak of the intersubjective
field. When group consciousness is aligned in loving intention
in a harmonious frequency, we can heal and function spiritually
in ways we rarely achieve by ourselves. If there is such as
a thing as a New Age, it is an evolutionary stage in which each
of us can be our unique magnificent self while joining in spiritual
communion with others for healing, joy, and service to God.
In this Laboratory of Life workshop, you will have an opportunity
to participate in an amazing and enjoyable experiential process
of becoming all we were meant to be.
Elisa Novick, MSS does profound work as a healer,
teacher, counselor, coach, minister, and facilitator of workshops
and trainings in personal, professional, and spiritual development.
She can assist you to clear personal, karmic and genetic patterns
that have limited you and teach you exquisite attunement skills
so you can become the magnificent master of life and Light that
all of us are destined to be. Elisa has been assisting people
in their growth since 1982 through her counseling ractice and
in facilitating hundreds of classes in holistic health, human
development, family constellation, organizational dynamics,
and spiritual awareness.

07-812 Sacred Scriptures: The Upanishads
With Rev. David Wallace
“When the mind becomes clear, and the heart
becomes pure, then can the Self be known. And those who know It
enjoy eternity.”
-- Katha Upanishad.
Three thousand years ago, a collection of mystical
teachings emerged in India and collectively became known as the
Upanishads. These sacred texts are the earliest living records
describing our quest for meaning in life, and within their exquisite
poetry we are asked to consider fundamental questions of karma,
reincarnation and the possibility of bliss -- the union of the
personal soul (Atman) with the infinite divine (Brahman).
Over these four evenings, taught seminar-style, we will read together
major portions of this ancient Hindu text, learn about its history
and context, and grapple with the timeless questions it poses
for us.

07-811 Voice Dialogue – Understanding the
Deep Terrain of our Inner Landscape
With Rev. Lynnaea Lumbard, Ph.D and Rev. Rick
Paine, EdD
We
like to imagine we are a single person who faces the world in
a consistent manner. When we look more closely at our lives, we
realize that different situations may evoke different aspects
of our self. Each aspect, or voice, has its own vision and agenda
for our life. These voices originated in our responses to past
people and circumstances. Often they offered a useful response
when they originally developed, but may be less then optimal when
they take over our life now, without our conscious knowledge.
In this exciting workshop we will learn to listen
to and learn from these voices without being run by them. We will
practice hearing the multiple voices in our self and others with
compassion and understanding. The Friday night overview and weekend
workshop will introduce the elements of Voice Dialogue and the
Psychology of Selves as a vital practice for our personal and
professional evolution. We will learn the basic approaches to
facilitating the voices of our Primary and Disowned Selves and
see how they interact with the selves of others in relationship.
We will then explore the Archetypal, Collective and Developmental
Patterns that underlie the energies of our various selves. This
will allow us to understand how these larger energy systems move
in us individually and collectively. Upon completing this workshop
students will be familiar with the Aware Ego, that function of
consciousness that gives us choice in our actions and relationships.
This experiential knowledge will allow us to avoid repeating negative
patterns in our lives, and give us a greater level of freedom
in our responses to the many challenges that confront us. The
skills learned in this workshop will be of practical value in
every aspect of life.
Rev.
Lynnaea Lumbard, Ph.D. is a Transformational Psychologist,
an Interfaith minister (One Spirit Class of 2005), and a Wilderness
Guide. She co-founded Temenos Associates (a national workshop
company) and also the Naos Foundation with her husband Rick Paine.
She now works with several national non-profits including the
Opus Archive and Research Center, the Threshold Foundation and

07-806 Who was Jesus (Really)?
with Rev. Joyce Liechenstein, Ph.D
In order to have a meaningful relationship with
Jesus, it is helpful to first understand who he really is. All
too often, history has prevented us from gaining an authentic
understanding of Jesus’ true nature. With everything that
has been written or said about Jesus over the centuries, how
can we know who he really is?

We will delve into the writings of Miceal Ledwith,
Levi, Marcus J. Borg, Karen Armstrong and other contemporary
teachers to take a fresh look at the life of Jesus. We will
explore interpretations of his life and message that may be
radically different from what we were taught growing up.
We will ask a variety of questions, incuding:
What was Jesus’ real message? What is his personal message
for us? Why is he still relevant today? We will explore these
important questions about someone who has been called a Prophet,
the Son of God, the Messiah and the Christ, and who is undoubtedly
one of the most important figures in Western history.
Joyce is Associate Director of One Spirit Learning
Alliance. She is a spiritual counselor with over 40 years experience
as a minister, meditation teacher, and director of religious
education.
Joyce holds an MA in Religious Education from New York Theological
Seminary, and a Ph.D in therapeutic counseling. She is a Licensed

to win love, to control the flow of love or even to subtly resist
love although it is what we most need. It is time to stop. This
gathering will provide a sacred space in which to:
• Wake up to your deepest Self
• See and surrender your blocks to love
• Know you are totally loved and lovable
• Learn to live as the love which is your core
At home in your own heart, relating becomes a
meeting of love as love, in a way that naturally brings freedom
and fulfilment. Bring your yearnings, your struggles, your mis-haps
and your wisdom about love, so that together we can open to
a deeper embodiment of who we truly are.

07-805 Tao of Dying I: Presence with the Self
with
Rev. Ariel Sebastian
What happens when we open the door, turn on th
light, and let it shine on an unexamined aspect of reality? The
intention of this series is to encourage students to explore and
deepen their understanding of the nature of loss, bereavement
and the dying process, in a safe and nurturing environment.
Through meditation, discussion, experiential activity,
and ritual we become sensitized to our thoughts and feelings about
death, we build rapport with the bereaved through conscious listening
skills, and we learn how to help a person die with grace and dignity.
Rev.
Ariel Sebastian, M.A., R.D.T., L.C.A.T. was formally a 2nd Year
Dean at One Spirit, where the class of 2005 affectionately referred
to her as “Little Mama.” She is a Registered Drama
Therapist, Licensed Creative Arts Therapist and Bereavement Facilitator
who has been in private practice since 1987. Ariel serves as a
